Written in 1717, Acis and Galatea is a high point of baroque repertoire and one of Handel's most treasured works. An idyllic romance between two young lovers, Galatea and Acis, is brutally rocked by Polyphemus, who is determined to have Galatea for himself. Acis ignores the warnings that love is only a fleeting pleasure and ends up putting himself directly in the line of fire.

With baroque specialist Peter Whelan (right) as Conductor, Acis and Galatea is performed by the dazzling Irish Baroque Orchestra. Sung in English, the concert features tenor Eamonn Mulhall and soprano Susanna Fairbairn (left) as the thwarted lovers, with bass baritone Edward Grint as Polyphemus and tenor Andrew Gavin as Damon.

Acis and Galatea has had a strong association with Ireland since Handel himself introduced it to audiences here in 1742, shortly after the premiere of Messiah. Handel's outstanding Acis and Galatea score combines graceful arias, colourful ensembles and spirited choruses, with scenes that are both comic and tragic.
